Tactical communications specialist Bittium has announced a deal to supply the Finnish Defense Forces with a new set of tactical routers and radio heads.

The € 8.8m deal forms part of the ongoing tactical communications framework agreement between Bittium and the Finnish government. The routers and radio heads will feed into the Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network (TAC WIN), a software-defined radio based wireless broadband network system intended for military and public safety use, which was the first purchase made as part of the agreement.

The core of the TAC WIN system is a tactical router that enables users to freely form both wired and wireless broadband data transfer IP connections. This newly acquired tactical router will enable Finnish Defense Forces to connect to different types of terminals and other communication systems connecting them into one communication network according to Bittium.

In addition to the router, the system comprises three types of radio heads, and each of the new radio heads covers its own frequency band area and can be used for flexible formation of optimized network topologies for different communication needs.

Hannu Huttunen, CEO of Bittium, said: “The ordered tactical routers and radio heads are related to several ongoing projects in the Finnish Defense Forces, where Bittium TAC WIN provides broadband IP network connections for mobile communication stations and command posts.

“All the products of the system are designed for harsh conditions, and thanks to the system’s automated functions the implementation of the system can be done quickly. Due to the software-based functionality of the Bittium TAC WIN system, it can be easily updated with additional performance cost-efficiently during the whole lifespan of the system. ”

Finnish Minister of Defense Antti Kaikkonen authorized the Finnish Defense Forces to purchase Bittium TAC WIN in December 2020.
