Aitech, a leading provider of robust on-board and system solutions for military, space and space applications, has announced that its mission-critical space-rated computers will enable communication technologies on board the second small satellite production unit developed by Astranis.
Astranis began construction of four very small geostationary communications satellites as it prepared to produce dozens and later hundreds of them simultaneously. The company is building satellites weighing about 400 kilograms, making them one of the smallest geostationary communications spacecraft available on the market.
This next satellite production unit includes an improved payload that provides higher performance and various bus improvements to extend the life of the satellites. Astranis develops a patented core technology, such as software-defined radio (SDR), and purchases critical components from highly qualified space partners, such as Aitech, which also provides flight computers for the first satellites developed by Astranis.
Anthony Lai, Director of Business and Research and Development at Aitech, said: “Providing mission-critical small satellite systems in LEO and NEO orbits is just one aspect of Aitech’s space innovation. We are also introducing GPGPU processing into in-orbit applications that will help facilitate artificial intelligence-based progress in a number of space applications. “
Aitech has spent more than thirty years developing robust, reliable and space-based electronic systems and components for use in a variety of government, commercial and private space programs. The company continues to develop cost-effective COTS based and customized integrated systems, depending on radiation and mission requirements, giving the company the ability to offer a wide range of space solutions with the support of engineering experience worth several decades.
In addition to Astranis’ small satellite program, Aitech offers other integrated space rating systems for missions in almost any orbit. Most importantly, the company’s rocket engine (RMC) is Virgin Galactic VSS, which successfully transported Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson on a 90-minute suborbital flight Unity 22, further demonstrating the success of the SpaceShipTwo spacecraft.
