Chief Minister YSJagan Mohan Reddy also announced on Saturday that his government would bear the cost of treating Bhaskar Rao, a medical officer at PHC Karamchedu in Prakasam district who had tested positive for Covid-19.
Rao’s wife, Bhagyalakshmi, a radiodiagnostics assistant at Guntur Medical College, also tested positive for coronavirus.
Both were later admitted to GGH, Guntur on April 30, and were assigned Remedesivir, provided by the government.
As Rao’s condition worsened, he was moved to Hyderabad for treatment, where doctors advised him to be placed on ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) and a lung transplant, but he was unable to bear the cost of 1.5 crores.
After learning of the situation from Minister Balineni Srinivasa Reddy, the chief minister instructed officials to ensure that the doctor would receive good treatment, with the government bearing the cost of treatment.
The Association of Physicians of Andhra Pradesh thanked the Prime Minister for his gesture.
Pidakala Association Secretary-General Samsundar said the decision reassures government doctors in the state and also gives them the strength to fight the pandemic.
