GRANDFATHER CLARA, CA – (BUSINESS LIVING) – July 21, 2021
What’s new: Intel and Bharti Airtel (“Airtel”), India’s leading communications solution provider, today announced a partnership to stimulate the development of a 4G and 5G virtualized radio access network (vRAN) network and open radio access network (RAN) technology. to transform Airtel’s networks to reap the full potential of 5G for its customers. The work of Intel and Airtel will develop communication networks from fixed-function equipment to virtualized deployment in the native cloud and will allow end-to-cloud communication to power our hyperconnected world.
“The ability to digitally power the vibrant population of connected consumers in India requires scalable and flexible networks that can be developed to meet the growing demands of their customers. Airtel provides its next-generation enhanced network with extensive Intel technology, including scalable Intel® Xeon® processors and FlexRAN software, to optimize RAN loads with embedded intelligence to scale its infrastructure and deliver on the promise of a connected India. “
– Dan Rodriguez, Corporate Vice President, Intel, Network Platforms Group
How it works: The Airtel network will be powered by a collection of Intel technologies: the latest Xeon Scalable processors, FPGA and eASIC, Ethernet 800 Series and the FlexRAN reference architecture. Transforming its network to meet the growing needs of its more than 345 million subscribers with a flexible, software-defined infrastructure will allow Airtel to respond quickly to changing customer bandwidth and latency requirements. By providing the basis for large-scale improved mobile broadband, mobile computing and network cutting, Airtel can offer new services to customers while programming its network to provide long-term cost optimizations.
Why it is important: Led by affordable smartphones and the lowest data rates worldwide, India has the world’s second largest internet population with over 620 million. 1 The active base of Internet users in the country is expected to grow to 900 million by 2025. 1 The advent of 5G will further deepen digital reception through a number of cases of industrial and consumer use.
“Airtel is pleased to have Intel as part of its fast-growing 5G partner ecosystem,” said Randip Sehon, Bharti Airtel’s CTO. “Intel’s state-of-the-art technology and experience will contribute greatly to Airtel’s mission to serve India with world-class 5G services. We look forward to working with Intel and local companies to unlock India’s potential as a global 5G hub. “
The collaboration is part of Airtel’s 5G roadmap for India as it transforms networks to allow its customers to take full advantage of the ultra-connected world, where Industry 4.0, cloud gaming and virtual / augmented reality are becoming a daily occurrence. . Airtel is the first telecommunications operator in India to demonstrate 5G over a live network and conduct 5G tests in major cities.
What next: As members of the O-RAN Alliance, the two companies will work closely together to develop a range of 5G Make in India solutions and enable world-class telecommunications infrastructure in India through local partners. Open RAN will be a future area of great innovation and creativity using Intel FlexRAN, a reference architecture with both software and hardware components, and will allow software-based radio base stations that can run on general-purpose servers located on edge of the net.
