Wind River ®, a world leader in intelligent software delivery, today announced that the companies are jointly developing a 5G vRAN solution that integrates the Intel ® FlexRAN reference software for systems powered by 3rd generation Intel ® Xeon ® scalable processors with built-in AI acceleration and also thus includes Intel ® Ethernet 800 network adapters and a special ACC100 accelerator from Intel vRAN together with Wind River Studio. The collaboration will further expand these innovations by optimizing the new capabilities provided by future next-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors (Sapphire Rapids). The joint decision is based on the work of Intel and Wind River on Verizon’s 5G highlights to complete the world’s first fully virtualized 5G end-to-end data session.
Wind River Studio provides a cloud platform for developing, deploying, operating and servicing mission-critical intelligent systems. Its cloud infrastructure capabilities include a fully cloud-based, Kubernetes container-based architecture based on the StarlingX open source project for deploying and managing distributed end-to-end networks. With a non-standard, optimized infrastructure with ultra-low latency and small area, Studio offers operators the flexibility to develop a new business and further improve overall property costs. Intel FlexRAN is a reference implementation of vRAN for virtualized cloud networks for radio access.
With the move to 5G to cloud-based approaches, operators are pursuing vRAN for greater flexibility. They are optimistic about the potential of vRAN as an anchor tenant for a remote cloud and eager to go beyond the challenges of deployment in the past. According to a study by Heavy Reading, operators identified the following as typical key challenges for vRAN: system integration (58% of responses), multi-vendor vRAN operational complexity (46%), and final cloud server performance (36%). 1
Potential customers and vRAN solution providers will be able to view evaluation packages consisting of reference software Intel FlexRAN, pre-integrated with Wind River Studio, to simplify and accelerate customer testing and deployment of 5G vRAN. This offer is being expanded by the recently introduced one Intel Select Solutions for Virtual Radio Access Network (vRAN) in the Wind River studio.
